Singer/guitarist Gerárd Moreno is back from Spain and is performing tonight at Café Citrón.
Congrats to the students of Natalia Monteleón who performed in the Annual Arte Flamenco Student Recital last night at Slayton House in Columbia, MD. I joined guitarists Ralph Pemberton and Michael Blalock accompanying singer Javier Bustamante and the students and "graduates" in a recital that clearly made Natalia very proud. I was too busy to take a lot of pictures. Here's one of a few of her students with "graduate" Cori Bernal.
Yours truly will be performing with Arte Flamenco this Saturday at 8pm at the Latino Fest in Baltimore. Here's a photo from last year's show (courtesy of Behzad).

There's a scene in the current film L'Auberge Espagnole which uses a snippet of flamenco in the soundtrack. Can you identify the artists and the album? (Don't google it until after you've seen the film.)

6/11/2003The DC Flamenco website was recently listed at the our-dc website as one of the "elements that make [DC] a singular place to live and to visit."
15-year-old Wes Adams, studying guitar since age 5, will give his first public flamenco performance on Friday June 20 11am-1pm near the Ann Taylor store at Mazza Gallerie (down the street from Bambule). Details
On June 17th, about an hour before the Maria Pages/Farruquito concert, guitarist Richard Marlow and dancers Anna Menendez and Edwin Aparicio will be giving a pre-performance preview. Here is a photo that was taken at the pre-performance preview in August 2000 before the Noche Flamenca concert at Wolf Trap. The dancers, who studied locally with Ana Martinez, were accompanied by guitarist José Antonio.
Spanish women don't need men to dance. All we need is music.

6/10/2003Interesting fact: the producer of the very popular Solo Compás series of practice CD's is Japanese. His name is Taketo Tomoshigue. He lives in Sevilla with his Japanese wife who is an established flamenco dancer there. (Thanks to local dance student Mia Hsu for this info)

6/8/2003Old timers in the DC Flamenco scene will recognize the name Manny Rocca. He was a flamenco guitarist who was active in DC a while back. Currently, he's in Spain as a photographer. Some of his work can be seen at the deflamenco website
Just heard that Manolo Soler passed away at the age of 60. Here is a photo that was taken in January 2003 at a reception at the Spanish Ambassador's residence in DC.
I was just at Calavera Restaurant last night where guitarist Torcuato and dancers Susana Granada, Sara Jerez and Micaela Moreno performed (Alma la Terremoto Graciela Vega and Linda Moll, former members of Danza del Río company, briefly joined them onstage). 6/7/2003Congrats to dancer Tamára Sol Flys [pronunciation: rhymes with "bliss"] who made her DC tablao debut at Elena's Oven last night accompanied by yours truly. My thanks to all our friends who came out to support their local flamenco artists. Here is a photo from her debut.
6/6/2003As you know, a number of talented flamencos have left recently left DC. Good news is that some new ones are coming in. One of them is Tamára Sol Flys who dropped by Cafe Citrón last Monday. I was impressed with her Sevillanas and bulerías. Hopefully we'll see more of Tamara in the near future. (She danced flamenco professionally in Arizona and recently moved to Baltimore where she has a few students--see teachers page for contact info.)

6/4/2003Film-maker Jocelyn Ajami informs me that Queen of the Gypsies won a top award, the Gold Remy Award for Documentary Filmmaking at the Worldfest in Houston and now the documentary was one of thirteen selected out of several hundred to the IFP Los Angeles Film Festival.
Early booking discount, for the first ever Classical Guitar Cruise, available until June 15th. DC-based guitarist Marija Temo will be giving a flamenco performance and workshop, possibly including a dancer.

Joaquín Serrano, owner of the former Andalucía de Bethesda has opened a charming new restaurant called Sol de Andaluscia at 8386 Rockville Pike in Rockville, MD. Call (240)314-0202. At present, there is no flamenco show there. The original Andalucía, located in Rockville since 1990, features flamenco on Thursday nights. Call (301)770-1880.
Café Citrón, which features flamenco on Monday nights, has recently added some nice photos to their website. Go to www.cafecitrondc.com and click on "events," then click on "Monday." You'll see a very brief flamenco history together with links to recent photos of the weekly flamenco show.
