Amongst the works portrayed are some of his most famous collections of poems including the Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads) which includes Prendimiento de Antonito El Camborio en el Camino de Sevilla and Muerte de Antonito perhaps a foreboding of Lorca's own death. His words are filled with passion for life, love, and death as in the lament to the bullfighter, Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejias. His Gypsy spirit is also present in his songs from the joyful sounds of Sevillanas del Siglo XVIII to the haunting and melancholy Zorongo. Guitarists Guillermo Christie and Torcuato Zamora, percussionists Hector "Coco" Barez and Antonio Castro-Ossorio, violinist Andrea Vercoe, and singers Jorge Porta and Margarita Ossorio join Furia Flamenca to bring you the passion of Federico García Lorca.

From the press release:

Welcome to a class first time ever offered: Cante Structure por Bulerías!!

Being that we just don't have enough opportunities to work with cante, I would like to offer an opportunity to anticipate and learn how to follow cante for those that are interested for when we are in juerga situations, on stage, following a recording, or a performance.

Objective: To offer a class on Letra Structure, where you will learn how to listen to different variations and styles of letra in order to accompany it via palmas, guitar, and dance. Specifically you will learn how the letra is accented, where the climaxes, resolutions, and remates tend to occur.

How the class will be run: We will listen to different recordings; I will make charts to help show how to follow the letras in the recordings or sing them for you; No one will be obligated to play, dance, or sing, but for those that want to accompany via guitar or dance to the recording or to me singing/playing, opportunities will be given and then in true cuadro style, we will apply the different accentuations learned in class with palmas to effectively support the dancer, guitarist and cante.

To all who are interested: Please bring in different CD recordings that you would like to make sense of. We will cover what we can in the class. Bring your dance shoes, guitars, vocal chords, hands to do palmas, and a notebook and pen to take notes. The class is geared towards your comfort and understanding.

Bienvenidos/Welcome to the Latino Festival of Washington 2009, celebrating 38 years of tradition. Once again, the Festival will take place in the nationŐs capital on Sunday, September 27, 2009, coinciding with the festivities of Hispanic Heritage Month, in NW Washington, from 11am to 7pm.

Among other innovations, this year the Festival will bring back the colorful floats that were so popular in the 1980s. The Parade of Nations includes more than 30 folkloric groups from Latin America, Spain, and the Caribbean. During Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15) Fiesta DC will host a variety of special events dedicated to the elderly, children, women, youth, immigrants, artists and entrepreneurs.

The Latino Festival will feature six stages that will incorporate music, folklore, theater, and other performing arts. In addition, the event includes a ChildrenŐs Festival, a Science Fair, a Community-Based Organization Information Fair, a Diplomatic Pavilion for embassies and consulates, and sections for Arts & Crafts, Public Information and International Cuisine.

Fiesta DC presents a unique opportunity for small businesses and large corporations, as well as government agencies and non-profit groups, to reach out to the Latino community in the region, which includes the capital and the neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia.

The Latino population, currently among the fastest-growing in the nation, exhibits strong purchasing power and is characterized by a young and willing labor force that has revitalized social and commercial life in the Washington metropolitan area, home to nearly one million Latinos. Do not miss this great opportunity to bring information to the Latino community about your programs, products and services.

Thank you for joining us in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The event is free to the public and family-oriented, with no sale of alcohol or tobacco allowed.

Flamenco Master Classes with Omayra Amaya at DC Dance Collective

Omayra AmayaOmayra Amaya comes from a long tradition of flamenco artists. She is the daughter of Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of Carmen Amaya, arguably the greatest flamenco dancer ever. Amaya appeared in her first choreographed role at the age of 12, when she performed with her father. By 15 she was touring and performing internationally with her parents. She attended the Boston Conservatory where she received a BFA in Dance and Choreography and later performed with Ana Sokolow, Ann Marie Forsyth, and Jennifer Scanlon. Soon after graduating from the Conservatory she founded the critically acclaimed fusion flamenco dance company Amaya, Flamenco Sin Límites and had a critically acclaimed nine-month run in Boston that garnered national attention. The show also inspired a PBS documentary about her and a film, Gypsy Heart, by Jocelyn Ajami. In 1999, she co-founded and directed at The National Conservatory of Flamenco Arts in Albuquerque, NM. She returned to Spain for further study and subsequently was offered a teaching position at The Boston Conservatory and Harvard University.
