Haven't you ever wondered about things like "When was Paco de Lucía last
in DC?" Um...well I just realized how useful it would be to have an archive
past events archive to help answers questions like that one. But since I didn't
realize this great idea until now, the archives only go back as far as June
2003. Oh well! Years from now, you'll better appreciate this archive.

Noche Flamenca at Theatre 80 in New York, NY
Spain's acclaimed flamenco company NOCHE FLAMENCA & the extraordinary SOLEDAD BARRIO present "Cielo de Tierra" June & July 2006 at Theater 80 in New York City (New York, NY) After touring the globe for the last 11 years, the acclaimed eight-member Spanish troupe Noche Flamenco will burn up the summer stage in their beloved New York, as they bring their pure, authentic brand of flamenco to the intimate setting of Theater 80. The company, led by flamenco phenomenon Soledad Barrio, will return for the 9th season to present the world premiere of Cielo de Tierra (Heaven of Earth) which opens on Wednesday, June 7 and runs through Sunday, July 30. The company, known for their transcendent and deeply emotional performances, will also include two of Spain¹s most renowned dancers, Alejandro Granados and Juan Ogalla, performing with five of Spain¹s most spell-binding musicians and singers.
The world premiere in New York will launch a world tour including: Argentina, Chile, California, Boston, Canada and Greece.
Founded in Spain in 1993 by Barrio, winner of the highest international awards for flamenco, and her husband and artistic director Martin Santangelo, Noche Flamenca has developed into one of Spain's most successfuland respected flamenco companies.
Flamenco is a primal scream, an essential cry to express the joy, sorrow, comedy and tragedy of individuals and groups who are repressed by some form of limitation - social, economic, spiritual, physical, etc. In an attempt, through singing, playing and dancing, to free the soul from this oppression, we are impelled onto a tough but beautiful road full of miraculous human complexity. Flamenco is our vehicle," exclaims Artistic Director, Santangelo. John Heilpern sums it up in a review of our company, "She (Soledad Barrio) transcends the human like some ecstatic animal. The percussive energy is phenomenal, of course. But what ultimately transpires is the grave beauty of a dark lament."
Performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8:00pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00pm and Sunday at 5:00pm at Theater 80, 80 St. Mark¹s
Place between 1st and 2nd Avenues, All tickets are $45 and may be bought by calling 212-352-3101 or by visiting: www.theatermania.com/nocheflamenca.

Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 2006
Editor's note: normally I wouldn't include announcements for events this far outside of DC, but it turns out that a lot of DC flamencos attend this event. So in case you're missing out, here's the info from the press release:
In 1987 the University of New Mexico asked a young flamenco dancer and instructor from New Mexico to present a special event for the College of Fine Arts' 50th Anniversary. That dancer was Eva Encinias-Sandoval, and the event was a small festival of three workshops and two performances featuring three flamenco artists from outside the state. The small festival was enough to create a buzz about flamenco in New Mexico.
1987 was the year Eva became the founder and director of the only flamenco festival outside of Spain, and her relentless drive to make flamenco available to New Mexico, and essentially to the entire country, has come to fruition. Though it hasn't been without a struggle, Eva has done what virtually no other individual has ever done in this country with the art form of flamenco. She has risked her career, her reputation, and her financial well-being year after year to support the art form right here in Albuquerque, not to mention that she has never, in twenty years, benefited financially from it.
People have asked her, why would someone go to such great lengths, risk so much, spend a lifetime of work in New Mexico on an ethnic dance form that belongs in Spain? Eva has said, "Because flamenco belongs to us too." Her mother was brought up in the art form, as was her mother’s mother. It is part of her family tradition, and a part of New Mexico’s Hispanic tradition as well.
Because of the excellence in artistry presented, supported, and educated here in New Mexico under Eva's flamenco organization, The National Institute of Flamenco, national attention has grown over the years. The festival has been honored in the Oprah Magazine, and visitors from all over our country, Canada, Mexico, South America and abroad have traveled to New Mexico to experience the state's flamenco educational programs and presentations. Celebrities such as Debbie Allen have traveled to New Mexico to attend performances presented by Eva - proving that flamenco is not an antiquated dance and music form to be archived in Spanish history but a vibrant relevant expression of social circumstance.
It is alive today in the American Southwest in part by the efforts of Eva who had the courage to claim her heritage to it, and to solidify its place in our community through her selfless acts of commitment. Because of her work, Albuquerque has been called "the Sevilla of North America." New Mexico has hosted 20 years of flamenco festivals, and is like a second home to flamenco dignitaries. Albuquerque has surprisingly become a home to an artistry unparalleled in any major city in the US.
Eva has brought flamenco a long way from 1987. Her nurturing of the art form and the community's exposure to flamenco has led to unprecedented triumph. In 2006, Festival Flamenco Internacional offers much more than the three workshops and two performances of 1987. This year, the festival offers 52 artists from Spain and around the world in 10 world-class performances. This year 8 days of 32 workshops in dance, guitar, singing, percussion, history, and theory are presented at the University of New Mexico. This year New Mexican residents can see all the performances at a special rate with the New Mexico Pass - Eva’s idea of course, and her own way of personally inviting all New Mexicans to be part of the greatness of the art form. This year is the year to truly experience the fruits of a 20-year labor of love by the woman who would not let flamenco die. Though Spain may be the birthplace of flamenco, indeed Eva has made New Mexico flamenco’s heartland. Her only wish is to see us all take advantage of it!

Friday June 30, 2006 8:00pm seating (performance after dinner) La Pureza del Cante Flamenco featuring el Maestro del Cante Flamenco Manolo Leiva at Taberna del Alabardero
For the first time in the USA, an evening of the pure cante flamenco featuring Manolo Leiva, considered by many a master of this art form and who is a repository of knowledge about flamenco song and an interpreter of unusual, little known styles. Accompanied by guitarists Marija Temo and Enrique Jova. One performance only. This is a very rare opportunity that aficionados will not want to miss. Most of the cante we hear these days is cante for dancing--beautiful, yes, but for dancing nonetheless. In this special evening at Taberna del Alabardero, Maestro Leiva will be performing songs which are rarely heard in recitals such as the Serrana, the Polo as well as styles of Malagueñas and other cantes which few of today's singers are familiar with and which may soon be lost to history. Henry Jova, who will accompany Manolo on two or three numbers, will also be giving a brief background and comments on the material which is to be sung
Taberna del Alabardero is located at 1776 I St in NW DC--nearest metro is Farrugut West on the orange and blue lines. Call 202-429-2200 and make your reservation.
