Las Tapas November 4, 2003 Margaret Lathan, Abigail Hedgepeth and Carlton Ashton at Las Tapas November 4, 2003 9:48pm Margaret, a close friend of Carlton's, is a regular in the audience at Cafe Citron. This was the first time she came to Las Tapas to see the flamenco show. She brought her friend Abigail who's visiting from Missouri. Cafe Citron November 3, 2003 Ramin and John at Cafe Citron November 3, 2003 10:10pm Carlton Ashton, Steve Svoboda and Tracy at Cafe Citron November 3, 2003 10:12pm This was Carlton's first time performing at Cafe Citron. Richard Marlow and son at Cafe Citron November 3, 2003 10:20pm Halloween Party at Pink Flamenco October 31, 2003 NOTE: this year's Halloween party on October 30, 2004 will be at the Hotel Lake Potomac. (NOT the Pink Flamenco) Details During the summer dancer Sandra Bishop moved into a former dental office in Chevy Chase which she has been remodeling into a combination of a residence and an artists' hangout--like the Blagden Alley ArtScience Warehouse in DC where Sara Candela and I first performed together 11 years ago. A month ago we were brainstorming ideas about remodeling and I told Sandra not to do a thing, for now. The building as is, in the midst of remodeling, has a creepy look that is perfect for halloween. As you'll see in the photos below, the party was a success. A lot of people came, made some new friends, had a great time and most importantly they got to see the future artists' hangout first hand, which Sandra lovingly calls: Pink Flamenco. Sandra Bishop, wearing a pink flamingo feather hat (just kidding), hosted the Halloween Party at the Pink Flamenco October 31, 2003 9:36pm I first met Sandra 12 years ago when she was studying flamenco with Joana del Río at the Carlos Rosario school in Georgetown. Dance student Roxanne as Mona Lisa, Willis Sutter and Steve Svoboda as Zorro October 31, 2003 9:43pm John Boulet (guitarist and inventor of Le Technique), Tamara Sol Flys as a sexy scientist (in real life, a sexy scientist anyway) and Lenore Boulet, a pianist who has a flamenco repertoire. October 31, 2003 10:20pm John and Lenore used to perform weekly at the former Andalucía Restaurant in Bethesda. Incidentally, Lenore is a big fan of the flamenco-influenced jazz pianist Chano Dominguez, who will be in DC this Saturday November 8 at the Library of Congress. Sandra Bishop as ??? October 31, 2003 10:42pm John October 31, 2003 10:42pm Sandra October 31, 2003 10:43pm Tamara October 31, 2003 10:45pm Tamara October 31, 2003 10:46pm "Dr" Tamara prepares to work on a patient October 31, 2003 10:55pm In real life, Tamara is working on a doctorate in cellular and molecular medicine, so eventually we'll have to really call her Dr Tamara. The Pink Flamenco house is a former dental office complete with dilapidated dental equipment. She's a little messy but it's OK. She's still in school. October 31, 2003 10:57pm The patient returns the favor. October 31, 2003 11:00pm Roman Rojas jamming with John Boulet November 1, 2003 12:03am Roman, originally from Venezuela, is a jazz pianist based in New York. He was very fascinated by our flamenco jam session. He plays a little bit of guitar and with a few quick tips joined in. (Notice the dental equipment in the background.) Guitarist Amilcar Cruz as screwed in the head and Joanna Szczepanska as a beautiful tavern wench November 1, 2003 1:36am Both had just come from work at Bambule. Joanna, originally from Poland, works as one of the hostesses at Bambule. She also lives here in the Pink Flamenco house. Steve without the mask November 1, 2003 2:27am Steve is a major supporter of this website. He hosted it on his home-based web server for a year. His pic on the opening page. RJ and Steve in a moment of late night inspiration November 1, 2003 3:02am They regularly perform with the local Spanish dance group, Danzamarina, directed by Micaela Mar. It seems like the jam session in this room has been going on all night. Steve takes a break from the guitar to join Kirsten (as a dominatrix) in the "grand ballroom." November 1, 2003 4:13am OK, no more pics. Will someone turn off the fog machine already? :) November 1, 2003 4:40am My thanks to everyone who came to the party--if you didn't get an invite or if you are interested in hosting a party or arts event at the Pink Flamenco, an email.
