The comments made about La Truco's workshop sounded so familiar! They made me smile. My teacher has been working with us on these types of isolations with traditional flamenco styling. There have been times when we've spent an hour and a half just learning how to properly isolate and engage the torso or hips or shoulders to, at the end of the class, bring it into our choreography and make our movements complete. For example, she tells us not to just move the arm, but rather shows us how to engage the torso and shoulders to make the arm come alive with an extra spark. When done right, incorporating the isolations adds so much strength and spunk to the dance--another brilliant layer of movement to take the dancing to a higher level. Having never been to Spain, it's awesome to see the lessons learned in class confirmed by Spaniards who visit the States.
