Miguelito's Photo Diary/Blog

July 25, 2005 - July 30, 2005

Turcuisine July 30, 2005

This was our first time to perform at Turcuisine (571-323-3330), a restaurant at the Worldgate Center in Herndon specializing in Turkish cuisine, duh! :-)

Last time, a month ago, was just an informal jam session.

As we arrived, I saw fellow guitarist Carlos Rocca driving into the parking lot. He came all the way from Leesburg for our show and to try the food. Of course he brought his guitar to join us for an after-show jam session.

Little by little, we're bringing flamenco shows to the Reston/Herndon area. RJ set this one up plus the show nearby at El Manantial. But I'm also working on getting other gigs in the vicinity, so stay tuned!

We arrived about 45 minutes before showtime to setup the sound. As you can see, it's an intimate space so we didn't have to crank up the volume too much.

It's pure coincidence that we both wore the same colors, really! :-)

It's cool looking at pics of myself in performance. I didn't realize how much I communicate through my eyes to my fellow musician. July 30, 2005 9:28pm (photo by Carlos)

No, I'm not pressing on the sixth string that hard. I have a double-jointed thumb that naturally bends that far with no effort. July 30, 2005 9:43pm (photo by Carlos)

First set's over. Time for a break! July 30, 2005 9:56pm

Our artist fee includes a delicious dinner of course. I didn't look at the menu. I like it hot so I just told the waitress that I wanted the spicy kabob with rice. Yum!

Sorry. I didn't remember to take this pic until I was halfway through the first kabob. Hey, I was starving! It was good and the pita bread was so fresh, soft and chewy. July 30, 2005 10:09pm

After quickly devouring our turkish meal, we went back to our guitars and finished up around 11:00pm. Behzad was in the neigborhood so he dropped by to say hello. He was just finishing up working at his family's Afghani kabob restaurant in Sterling. Anyway, we let Carlos and Behzad take the stage, so to speak, while I enjoyed a cup of thick Turkish coffee.

My birthday thanks July 28, 2005

July 28, 2005

Yesterday (Thursday) was birthday. I received so many emails, text messages, phone calls and birthday cards. I also got a few very thoughtful gifts that demonstrated how well people know me through my photo diary. Yeah, if you read it regularly you get a sense of who I am and what I like.

Just knowing that many of you read my photo diary regularly is a gift in itself! I hope that I inspire many of you to fill your life with flamenco or whatever it is that fulfills your heart. Whatever your passion is, make the time for it!

I'm amazed at how many people know me through my website, many of whom I've yet to meet in person. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I appreciate everyone who took a moment to wish me a happy birthday yesterday. THANK YOU!

Las Tapas July 26, 2005

I usually don't know who is dancing at Las Tapas until they walk onstage at the beginning of the show--which is OK cuz I can accompany just about any dancer who knows how to work with a guitarist--no rehearsal necessary, really!

This particular evening I was especially pleased to see that one of them was Cecilia Terrasa. It was her first time to perform in an evening show here at Las Tapas. (She made her tablao debut last summer at the Andalucía restaurant in Rockville.) Anyway, the audience loved her! Congrats Cecilia!

Our friend Carlton Ashton was in the audience, so we of course invited him onstage for some Sevillanas and bulerķas.
