Harpswell Festival in Maine July 24, 2005

Congrats to Ginette for getting us this festival gig and setting up the show. It was fun and the view of the ocean was inspiring--you know how much I like to be near the water. :-) I'm definitely going to plan to visit Maine again in the future!

The view as we arrive in time for the first show at 12:15pm. July 24, 2005 11:52am

The following excerpt is from an editorial titled "Harpswell seeks unity in family festival today" that was published in the Portland Press Herald July 25, 2004, the date of last year's festival.

"...It's not the Fourth of July, so there shouldn't be any fireworks today in Harpswell, where residents have planned a town festival on the site once proposed for a liquefied natural gas terminal.

Both supporters and opponents are invited and people on both sides have been involved in planning the event, which will be held on the George J. Mitchell field. Sponsors plan live performances, food and family activities on the former Navy fuel storage site that borders Casco Bay.

If it comes off - and there's no reason why it shouldn't - it will mark a major healing effort for this town, once bitterly divided over a natural gas conglomerate's proposal to built an LNG storage and transshipment terminal on the site.

The town was promised millions of dollars in taxes and other payments annually by the company, which led many to support the plan. Others, however, saw only an eyesore on the site and an environmental threat to the land and water around it, as well as major disruptions to fishermen and boaters on the adjacent channel.

A vote March 9 went decisively against the proposal, but the debate had been marred by hard feelings. A reported bomb threat the day of the vote didn't help matters.

What counts now, however, as proposals continue to surface for placing such a terminal elsewhere along Maine's coast, is that the townspeople realize they live in one community, and should act like it. This festival seems like a highly commendable way to make that common feeling a reality again..."

After the first show, I was starving and had the craving for some seafood. So we drove down the road to Estes Lobster House (207-833-6340), right on the water...

Below is the view from our table. Try to imagine a cold drink in your hand, the cool breeze, salt in the air and the soothing sound of the surf beating against the shore.

We had a few hours until the next show at 7pm so we took a sidetrip to Freeport to visit the L.L. Bean store and do some outlet shopping.

We ran into some of Behzad's high school friends at L.L. Bean and hung out for a short while. I got hungry again and found a place nearby that sells lobster rolls...

Around 6pm, we arrived back at the festival with an hour or so to warm up and get ready for our second show of the day...

As you can tell by the long shadows, we performed as the sun was about to set. It was the best natural stage lighting and you should've seen the view of the ocean.

We promised some friends we'd meet them for dinner, so right after the show, we took off. But I couldn't resist the temptation to stop for a moment to take in the view one last time...

Rehearsal at Mitchell Field (Harpswell, Maine) July 23, 2005

Just got back last night from a relaxing weekend in the coastal part of Maine--think cool ocean breezes with salt in the air, postcard-perfect gorgeous sunsets, fresh mouth-watering seafood and laid-back really nice people.

Mitchell Field is located in Harpswell on a very narrow peninsula off the coast, about a 30 mile drive from Portland, Maine. It used to be a fuel storage facility for the military. Now it's the site for an annual summertime event: the Harpswell Festival in which we were invited to perform.

The show was scheduled for Sunday July 24th, but we got in on Friday to take the time to enjoy hanging out in Maine. On Saturday, we went to Mitchell Field to do a quick run-through.

This stage was built just for the festival and was just painted a few hours ago. July 23, 2005 1:34pm

Unfortunately, the paint wasn't completely dry, so we couldn't rehearse on the stage itself. So we had to settle for having Ginette gently do her footwork on the cement.

It was a very brief rehearsal--since we had been practicing over the past few weeks, we had our show well-prepared anyway. But the point really was to checkout the performance space and to anticipate any problems.

I won't bore you with any more touristy pics. Later that night we went to a party with Behzad's old friends from high school. We sat on the porch, enjoyed some drinks, conversation and music...

We wanted to check out the night life in downtown Portland so we left early and stopped by the store for caffeine to wake up...

Moxie Soda. It's a Maine thing. I got myself the usual Red Bull though. July 23, 2005 11:03pm

In less than ten minutes, we were in downtown walking down Wharf St where they have a lot of cool hangouts.

We ended up at a place called Amigos (207-772-0772) where Behzad ran into a few high school friends.

We didn't stay out too late since we had a long day ahead of us at the Harpswell Festival.

Arte Flamenco at Artscape in Baltimore July 23, 2005

I was invited to perform with Arte Flamenco, but unfortunately their show was scheduled the same weekend I was going to Maine. My thanks to Natalia Cuesta for sending me pics.
