Jaleo Crystal City

Sevillanas Show at Jaleo in Crystal City, VA

Tapas bar. This is one of three branches in the Jaleo "chain" and probably the most beautifully designed. The dancers perform Sevillanas twice a night accompanied by recorded music. No stage--they dance around the tables and bar areas.

Duende Camaron at Chi-Cha Lounge around 9:00pm

Bar with a limited menu (latin-american food). The atmosphere here is very laid back. Lots of comfy chairs and sofas, dim lighting. Duende Camarón performs originals and covers of rumba (Gipsy Kings and more).

Cafe Citron

Mondays around 8:00pm and 9:00pm
Flamenco show at Cafe Citrón

Bar with extensive menu (primarily Caribbean/latin-american food). Show features dancer Sara Jerez with singer Gerárd Moreno and guitarist Michael Perez. This venue is very narrow. There are only a few spots that have a full view of the show. Otherwise you'll have to stand by the bar with the rest of the crowd. Call ahead and reserve the table by the stage. Between shows and afterwards, DJ plays international music and it's usually very loud. Great for dancing--not so good for conversation. Promoted at www.clubZone.com.

Flamenco workshops by Carmel Shelly in Bethesda, MD

Two workshops coming up on Wednesday, March 1st that will be given by Carmel Shelly. The first will be a Tangos Workshop (for beginner flamenco dancers) from 6:30 PM to 7:45 PM and the second will be a Soleares Workshop (for intermediate flamenco dancers) that will be given from 7:45 PM until 9:00 PM. Carmel has been teaching and performing with Ziva's Spanish Dance Ensemble for about six months.

Carmel Nathan-Shelly is an Israeli dancer, choreographer and teacher with a extensive background in classical ballet and flamenco. In 1995, she won the Adi Agmon National Flamenco Competition which was overseen by Cristina Hoyos. In 1999 she established her own company. She has taught students in Israel for over 15 years and 3 of her students have won national flamenco competitions.

Juan del Valle Flamenco Dance Workshop at Experimental Movement Concepts in Baltimore

JUAN DEL VALLE began his flamenco training at the Conservatoire National in Paris. In 2000, he received a grant to travel to Sevilla where he studied with the family of the legendary El Farruco. He has also studied with masters Jose Galvan, Domingo Ortega, Antonio ‘el Pipa’ and Manolo Marin.

In March of 2004, Juan was selected to dance in the premier performance of Israel Galvan’s Torero al Lucinogen at the Teatro Central in Sevilla, Spain. Concurrently, heperformed a five-month run as a soloist at La Carboneria in Sevilla with shows televised in New York and Europe. Juan was hostedby the University of Zulia, Venezuela, and the National Ministry of Culture to participate in the international dance congress, Cuerpo Creativo. As a guest of the Chinese Government, he performed in the internationally televised Culture Festival of Beijing. Juan recentlyfinished ten weeks of summer performances as a soloist with the company of Maria Benitez, Teatro Flamenco. Juan was invited by Ms. Benitez to join the faculty of the Institute for Spanish Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he taught for five months.

Flamenco workshop with Antonio Santaella

I am THRILLED to be able to announce that registration for Antonio Santaella's flamenco workshops has now started. The workshops will be held at the Joy of Motion Dance Center's new location in downtown Bethesda right across from the Bethesda metro stop. The workshops will be held on April 7, 8, 9, 14, and 15. Attached please find two flyers for the upcoming flamenco workshops with Maestro Antonio Santaella (one is informational and one is for registration).

For those who do not know, Antonio was and continues to be my teacher and mentor in flamenco. He is THE one who taught me to be the flamenco teacher and dancer I am today. I owe it all to him! I am thrilled that he will be here with us for a 5-day workshop. From all the teachers I have had both locally and from Spain, I have never encountered such an amazing dancer and teacher. I encourage you all to take advantage of these workshops and the opportunity to study with him. This may very well be our only opportunity to have him here with us!

I highly recommend that you sign up early for these workshops as space is limited (plus you can take advantage of the reduced advanced registration rate!).

Also, don't forget the April 8 and 9 flamenco concert "Una Noche de Baile" at the Jack Guidone Theatre.
