Past Events Archive

Haven't you ever wondered about things like "When was Paco de Lucía last in DC?" Um...well I just realized how useful it would be to have an archive past events archive to help answers questions like that one. But since I didn't realize this great idea until now, the archives only go back as far as June 2003. Oh well! Years from now, you'll better appreciate this archive.

Tickets at https://secure.tasteusa.com/cgi-bin/order/order.cgi?X_DC Join TasteDC.com for a 4-Course Spanish Wine Dinner entertained by live Flamenco dancers! Gypsies say "it is in the blood" this dance of passion and mystery. Flamenco includes the "jondo" – profound and serious, the cry of people oppressed for many centuries; and the "chico" - happy, light and often humorous. Flamenco dancers wear special shoes or boots with dozens of nails driven to the soles and heels. The ladies wear long costumes often with many frills and practice for hours their elegant arm and hand movements. The upper body must emphasize grace and posture. A recent review of Solé in Digital City Washington rates the Restaurant a "Pick" due to it's tapas, a "real plus". We will serve Mediterranean cuisine and Spanish wines, the menu will be listed soon! Please Note: this is a seated 4-Course Wine Dinner. More information and purchase tickets at http://www.tastedc.com.

The Spanish Dance Theatre of the Spanish Dance Society emphasizes the presentation of all four types of Spanish Dance -- Regional/ Folk, Classical/Escuela Bolera, Neoclassical and Flamenco -- and uniquely offers an extensive repertoire of authentically staged, richly costumed and little-seen folk dances from all regions of Spain. Programs are compiled from the vast repertoire of classical, regional, flamenco and modern choreography. They have performed at The Kennedy Center, Covent Garden and also at schools, festivals and theaters throughout the eastern coast of the United States. They have received generous support from the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain and the DC Commission of the Arts among others in the past.

You can help them continue their vision by supporting this performance at La Tasca Spanish Tapas Bar & Restaurant just recently opened in November 2003 in the heart of the Penn Quarter. Indulge your taste buds with authentic tapas, made-to-order paellas and paired with an intoxicating choice of libations - 9 Specialty Sangrias and over 40 Spanish wines. All this complemented by impeccable service awaits when you step inside this old Spanish tavern decorated with colorful accents and giant round candelabras glowing overhead. Descend the ornate spiral staircase into the lower level dining area complete with its own bar and feel the warmth emanating from the orange stucco walls intricately decorated with bric-a-brac, art and pottery.

La Magia Flamenca: Rafael de Utrera & Rafael de Carmen at Lisner Auditorium

From the press release:
Flamenco’s new singing star Rafael de Utrera launches first U.S. solo tour; After tours with Paco de Lucia, Farruquito, Carrasco and others, De Utrera takes center stage
"Flamenco, perhaps more than any other music, is an acquired taste. Intensely rooted in Spanish tradition and tierra, the music can sometimes seem impenetrable to outsiders; the preserve of specialists and aficionados. Yet in recent years Americans have been increasingly drawn to flamenco. Lured by its passion and theatricality we’ve become increasingly sophisticated consumers of the music, savoring the experience with the kind of enthusiasm we usually reserve for a rare fino or vintage rioja.

"Yet of the three main components of flamenco – guitar, dance and vocals – true appreciation of what many consider the soul of the music, the art of the flamenco singer, is the most challenging. It’s not all due to the language barrier either. The wailing, attenuated sobs and gritos of the flamenco cantaor (singer) can be downright daunting. Enter Rafael Usero Vilches – a.k.a. Rafael de Utrera – one of the most accessible, versatile and authentic flamenco cantaors to come to these shores in years."

"At just 32 years old, Utrera is already one of the most accomplished singers of his generation. Growing up in the town of Utrera, near Sevilla, Rafael absorbed flamenco firsthand at the popular peña (flamenco club) owned by his father. By the age of 10 he was already performing all over Andalucia with a group of young singers that included his brother Juan Luis. But Rafael had the raw talent and ambition to turn this avocation into a career, playing bigger and bigger tablaos in Seville and Barcelona until he came to the attention of well-known flamenco dancer Cristina Hoyos, who invited the young singer to tour the world with her company in 1997."

"Since then he’s never looked back, working with just about every major flamenco star and touring extensively. He’s accompanied many of the greats, from such renowned dancers as Farruquito, Carmen Lozano, Joaquin Cortes, and Eva Yerbabuena to such legends of the guitar as Tomatito and Paco de Lucia. Last year, during his participation in the 2003 Flamenco Festival USA, Rafael demonstrated his versatility to American audiences by singing behind both avant garde flamenco dancer Israel Galvan and the great Manuela Carrasco, whose style of dance is much more traditional. Rafael was able to match these two powerhouses’ contrasting performances flawlessly."

"While he’s a brilliant accompanist, Utrera is also an accomplished soloist. His honeyed, raspy tenor projects a startling range and nuance – equally capable of a heartrending wail or a sexy whisper. With this powerful instrument, Utrera is that very rare kind of cantaor who can stand alone, commanding stages and captivating audiences without adornment. He’s the flamenco singer that American audiences have been waiting for."

"Rafael’s company will include Jose Manuel Leon Delgado and Juan Requena on guitar, and Katumba on percussion with Rafael de Carmen as featured dancer."
[Editor's note: this lineup of performers is current as of Sept 23, 2004]

Micaela Moreno with Miguelito at Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Georgetown, DE

Fifty years ago, March 17, 1955, a group of Carmelite Sisters of Charity were asked to come to the U.S. to open a parochial school, Our Lady of Grace, in Castro Valley, California. In the following years we expanded our ministry in San Mateo and San Jose, California. In 1978 the Sisters, in response to the needs of the new immigrants, moved to the East Coast: Washington, DC, joining some of our Sisters already established there since 1968. At the present time we also serve in Langley Park, Maryland, Brooklyn, New York, and Georgetown, Delaware.

"We, the Carmelite Sisters of Charity, were founded by St. Joaquina de Vedruna in Vic, Barcelona, Spain. February 26, 1826. The urgent needs of the nineteenth Century provided Joaquina de Vedruna a framework for her desire to consecrate her life to God. Together with nine young women, she started to live in community and provided a very clear objective: The education of young women and the care of the sick, preferably the poorest and the most needy. She was declared a Saint by Pope John XXIII in 1959. Today her daughters are established in 24 countries in four continents."

That was a little history on the Carmelite Sisters of Charity Vedruna. The 50th Anniversary of the Carmelites of Charity will take place on April 2, 2005 at 12:00pm at St. Michael the Archangel, Georgetown, DE. The contact number is: (302) 856-3678. We will be performing at around 3pm.

June 7-July 30, 2006
Noche Flamenca at Theatre 80 in New York, NY

Spain's acclaimed flamenco company NOCHE FLAMENCA & the extraordinary SOLEDAD BARRIO present "Cielo de Tierra" June & July 2006 at Theater 80 in New York City (New York, NY) After touring the globe for the last 11 years, the acclaimed eight-member Spanish troupe Noche Flamenco will burn up the summer stage in their beloved New York, as they bring their pure, authentic brand of flamenco to the intimate setting of Theater 80. The company, led by flamenco phenomenon Soledad Barrio, will return for the 9th season to present the world premiere of Cielo de Tierra (Heaven of Earth) which opens on Wednesday, June 7 and runs through Sunday, July 30. The company, known for their transcendent and deeply emotional performances, will also include two of Spain¹s most renowned dancers, Alejandro Granados and Juan Ogalla, performing with five of Spain¹s most spell-binding musicians and singers.

The world premiere in New York will launch a world tour including: Argentina, Chile, California, Boston, Canada and Greece.

Founded in Spain in 1993 by Barrio, winner of the highest international awards for flamenco, and her husband and artistic director Martin Santangelo, Noche Flamenca has developed into one of Spain's most successfuland respected flamenco companies.

Flamenco is a primal scream, an essential cry to express the joy, sorrow, comedy and tragedy of individuals and groups who are repressed by some form of limitation - social, economic, spiritual, physical, etc. In an attempt, through singing, playing and dancing, to free the soul from this oppression, we are impelled onto a tough but beautiful road full of miraculous human complexity. Flamenco is our vehicle," exclaims Artistic Director, Santangelo. John Heilpern sums it up in a review of our company, "She (Soledad Barrio) transcends the human like some ecstatic animal. The percussive energy is phenomenal, of course. But what ultimately transpires is the grave beauty of a dark lament."

Performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8:00pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00pm and Sunday at 5:00pm at Theater 80, 80 St. Mark¹s Place between 1st and 2nd Avenues, All tickets are $45 and may be bought by calling 212-352-3101 or by visiting: www.theatermania.com/nocheflamenca.

June 9-16, 2006
Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 2006

Editor's note: normally I wouldn't include announcements for events this far outside of DC, but it turns out that a lot of DC flamencos attend this event. So in case you're missing out, here's the info from the press release:

In 1987 the University of New Mexico asked a young flamenco dancer and instructor from New Mexico to present a special event for the College of Fine Arts' 50th Anniversary. That dancer was Eva Encinias-Sandoval, and the event was a small festival of three workshops and two performances featuring three flamenco artists from outside the state. The small festival was enough to create a buzz about flamenco in New Mexico.

1987 was the year Eva became the founder and director of the only flamenco festival outside of Spain, and her relentless drive to make flamenco available to New Mexico, and essentially to the entire country, has come to fruition. Though it hasn't been without a struggle, Eva has done what virtually no other individual has ever done in this country with the art form of flamenco. She has risked her career, her reputation, and her financial well-being year after year to support the art form right here in Albuquerque, not to mention that she has never, in twenty years, benefited financially from it.

People have asked her, why would someone go to such great lengths, risk so much, spend a lifetime of work in New Mexico on an ethnic dance form that belongs in Spain? Eva has said, "Because flamenco belongs to us too." Her mother was brought up in the art form, as was her mother’s mother. It is part of her family tradition, and a part of New Mexico’s Hispanic tradition as well.

Because of the excellence in artistry presented, supported, and educated here in New Mexico under Eva's flamenco organization, The National Institute of Flamenco, national attention has grown over the years. The festival has been honored in the Oprah Magazine, and visitors from all over our country, Canada, Mexico, South America and abroad have traveled to New Mexico to experience the state's flamenco educational programs and presentations. Celebrities such as Debbie Allen have traveled to New Mexico to attend performances presented by Eva - proving that flamenco is not an antiquated dance and music form to be archived in Spanish history but a vibrant relevant expression of social circumstance.

It is alive today in the American Southwest in part by the efforts of Eva who had the courage to claim her heritage to it, and to solidify its place in our community through her selfless acts of commitment. Because of her work, Albuquerque has been called "the Sevilla of North America." New Mexico has hosted 20 years of flamenco festivals, and is like a second home to flamenco dignitaries. Albuquerque has surprisingly become a home to an artistry unparalleled in any major city in the US.

Eva has brought flamenco a long way from 1987. Her nurturing of the art form and the community's exposure to flamenco has led to unprecedented triumph. In 2006, Festival Flamenco Internacional offers much more than the three workshops and two performances of 1987. This year, the festival offers 52 artists from Spain and around the world in 10 world-class performances. This year 8 days of 32 workshops in dance, guitar, singing, percussion, history, and theory are presented at the University of New Mexico. This year New Mexican residents can see all the performances at a special rate with the New Mexico Pass - Eva’s idea of course, and her own way of personally inviting all New Mexicans to be part of the greatness of the art form. This year is the year to truly experience the fruits of a 20-year labor of love by the woman who would not let flamenco die. Though Spain may be the birthplace of flamenco, indeed Eva has made New Mexico flamenco’s heartland. Her only wish is to see us all take advantage of it!

Performances June 9-15 to be held at the University of New Mexico's Rodey Theater:

"Fiesta Flamenca," gala performances June 16th and 17th to be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Journal Theater:

Festival Workshops June 10-17th to be held at the University of New Mexico’s Dance Program, Carlisle Gym.

Flamenco Kid’s Camp, June 5-16th to be held at the National Conservatory of Flamenco Arts in downtown Albuquerque.

La Pureza del Cante Flamenco featuring el Maestro del Cante Flamenco Manolo Leiva at Taberna del Alabardero

For the first time in the USA, an evening of the pure cante flamenco featuring Manolo Leiva, considered by many a master of this art form and who is a repository of knowledge about flamenco song and an interpreter of unusual, little known styles. Accompanied by guitarists Marija Temo and Enrique Jova. One performance only. This is a very rare opportunity that aficionados will not want to miss. Most of the cante we hear these days is cante for dancing--beautiful, yes, but for dancing nonetheless.
