Miami Diary

[Editor's note: Dancer Kyoko (formerly from DC), who was interviewed here last May, has been keeping me up-to-date on her exploration of the flamenco scene in her recently adopted new home of Miami South Beach.]

Kyoko and Manolete

Well as you know, I had been taking Manolete's 10-day workshop, and we decided to go to this particular tablao because he knows the dancer there very well.

They had started out together in the Madrid tablaos in the late 60's. Everyone kept on honoring his presence there that night, which he graciously accepted, and in general we had a really fun time.

In the end, he was asked to join them on stage (and he dragged me up there with him) to do some pataíta de bulerías. He cracks me up because he speaks quite a bit of Japanese, and even in class he would mutter in Japanese here and there. He even knows a few words in "osaka-ben" which is the dialect of the Osaka region!
