It's just you and the dancer (Monday August 13, 2001) Here's something you don't see too often: a view from the performers' line of sight. Yesterday, yours truly performed with Natalia Monteleón's Arte Flamenco at the Baltimore Hispanic Festival in Patterson Park. I was one of the two guitarists and during the silencio section of Edwin Aparicio's alegrías, I let guitarist Guillermo Juan Christie play solo so I could sneak in a quick picture. After the performance, Edwin is greeted by Baltimore area aficionado Javier Bustamante and friends Delfina Pereda and Jorgelina Lújan.
I can still remember the day that Edwin made his Baltimore "soloist debut" in 1996 at the Sevilla restaurant. He performed with Natalia Monteleón and yours truly played guitar. Javier of course was there. (Friday August 10, 2001) We have never met in person, but guitarist Pat D'Aprile and I have communicated online for some time now. He just sent me some pictures from a recent show: "Greetings from New Jersey!! We have just performed at the first 'Waterfront Arts Festival' in Camden, New Jersey with friends from New York: Carlos Revollar and his wife Gisele... One picture [on the right] shows Pat, Teresa and Gisele and the other [above] shows Pat, Gisele, Carlos and Teresa. The show went well and we had a great time. A friend of ours took these pictures and we are hoping to have a web site up by Fall!! Pat & Teresa D'Aprile"
Guitarist Carlos Revollar and his wife, singer Gisele, will be performing Sunday September 9, 2001 with Anna and Tito Rubio at the Feria del Barrio in Philadelphia. Details in the calendar. "I have been checking out your website from here to keep up with what´s going on. Guess what? There are people in Jerez de la Frontera that know you through the [DC flamenco] website... But, boy, I tell you, Flamenco in Jerez is so so so different from other places. I love it. We are going to Sevilla Wednesday... We are gonna see Miguel Poveda...and then José Menese on Friday in Córdoba." Thanks Ramin. So people know me in Jerez...wow! We miss going to hear you and guitarist Amilcar Cruz at the Taberna del Alabardero on Friday nights. Did you know that there are five restaurants in the Taberna del Alabardero chain? They are in Madrid, Puerto Banus, Sevilla, San Pedro de Alcantará and Washington, DC.
How to prepare for Tati's workshop If you're planning to take the beginner/intermediate workshop, become familiar with the compás of tangos and bulerías. For the advanced workshop, become familiar with a typical letra of tarantos and if you don't know the compás of jaleos extremeños, ask a knowledgable aficionado. We are very fortunate to have here in Washington DC a prodigy of Tati: Edwin Aparicio To help you prepare for the workshop, Edwin is giving a preparatory class especially geared for those of you taking Tati's Workshop. (It's also open to anyone who just wants an intensive flamenco dance technique workout.) The preparatory class will take place in the beautifully renovated facilities of the American Dance Institute in Rockville, MD (near Twinbrook metro on the red line) for the next two weekends:
If you are planning to take this class, please call Edwin at (202)262-8491 as soon as possible. Click here for directions to the American Dance Institute. |
