Tutto Bene June 22, 2005

Only bad thing about performing almost every night is that I miss out on the shows by my colleagues. This past Wednesday, there was a flamenco show at Tutto Bene in Arlington. Fortunately, someone took pics and emailed them to me. My thanks to Elizabeth!

Cafe Bonaparte June 22, 2005

It's been a month since I last played here and it was good to be back. I already miss Spain, and this is the closest thing to a Spanish bar that I've been to in DC so far: tiny rooom, tiny tables, lots of beautiful people and a few of them dancing Sevillanas and a few of them conversing very loudly (ahem!). The only thing missing to the make the experience authentic was excessive cigarette smoke. :-)

Flamenco night at Cafe Bonaparte is every other Wednesday. The next show is on July 6, 2005. This place is small, so I recommend making a reservation by calling 202-333-8830.

Red Maple June 21, 2005

The show at Red Maple is every Tuesday around 8pm. Sometime this summer, I'm going to take a Tuesday night off from Las Tapas and go check out the show. Anyone wanna go? Natalia Cuesta sent me these photos from last night's performance.

¿Como estás? I am sending you some of the pictures I took yesterday at the Red Maple. The show was so good… I really like Tamara and Richard! They were amazing. José Oretea and Javier Bustamante joined the two of them with their great voices and the rest of the group accompanied with palmas. I think you know everybody in the pictures, so I am not sending names, right? We had so much fun yesterday… We missed you. After the show we danced sevillanas and stayed until they closed, and then we all went to Fausty’s house, where we continued with the party until 3:30 am! You will notice there is a picture of Fausty and me displaying a number two with our fingers… This was our second night out in a row, and I think there are more to come…

The flamenco show at Red Maple is every Tuesday night around 8pm. Call (410)547-0149.

Cafe Citron June 20, 2005

It was good to be back. For the first time in four years, I took two consecutive Mondays off from Citron to take a vacation in Spain.

My new friend here is Safoura Safavi, a Sweden-based flamenco guitarist and singer who frequently travels to Sevilla to study at the Cristina Heeren Foundation. The CD in my hand is by guitarist Johan Moberg and features Safoura singing the chorus in the bulería, Siete Cartas. (Listen to some sample tracks)

Jason brought his cajón and joined us onstage for both shows adding that special edge that made the show better than usual--I could tell based on the cheers from the crowd.

Practicing on Monday morning June 20, 2005

We got back very late to DC after our gig in Baltimore, so I crashed at guitarist Henry's house. In the morning, I saw a chair by the sunlit window that looked perfect for practicing guitar, and so I did. Of course, we ended up talking about guitar and flamenco for awhile and made him late for work. Oh well! :-)

Arte Flamenco at the EBLO Latino Festival in Baltimore June 19, 2005

Day two with Arte Flamenco. The sky was overcast and threatening rain but that didn't stop us or the crowds from coming to the Latino festival.

I was starving so I left my guitar in the dressing room and walked around the festival to check out the food booths.

Afterwards we went to a restaurant nearby and enjoyed some crabcakes and steamed shrimp, yum! Flamenco, good food and beautiful girls...life is good. :-)

A few hours later, the student recital started at 7pm. Time flew by for me since I was onstage the whole time. I was having fun trying to guess who amongst the students will become featured performers in the future.

Most of the dancers that I call upon for my own gigs happen to be her former (and current) students and for a good reason--Natalia trains them well as dancers, performers and in how to work with a guitarist and a singer.

Pam and Alex still psyched after the show. They try out some of the guys' choreography. June 18, 2005 9:14pm

Intimo in Chicago June 2005

Aleksey writes:
I am sending you some of the pictures that I took in Chicago of Edwin's presentation of "Intimo" at the Hot House this past weekend. Kathi Beste as always gets kudos for getting things together for this show to ensure its success. Yiyi, Jesus Montoya, Richard Marlow, Anna Menendez, Edwin, and Carmela Greco yet again really kicked butt.
