Paul Fradin's 50th in New York Harbor April 19, 2005

Paul writes:

Yeah Paul. You do look great! Your flamenco parties in DC are legendary and I see you haven't lost your magic touch in New York. Happy 50th birthday, Paul!

Here are some pics from a Sevillanas show last year by Paul and Karen.

Cafe Citron April 18, 2005

Generally my shows are pretty good. But of course, some are better than others. I can have a great day and a not-so-great show and vice-versa. It's no use trying to control all of the tangible and non-tangible factors that make or break a show. All I can say is that when everything falls perfectly into place, just be there mentally and spiritually in the moment and enjoy it while it lasts.

These kind people were willing to take photos for me during the show: Colleen, Juan and Diana. Thank you!

Someone asked me where I got my boots--they're from ShoeFly in Arlington. OK so they're not "flamenco" but they're still cool! :P April 18, 2005 8:30pm

[Editor's note: As I edited the above photo, it was about 2:10am, and I decided to call up Micaela to make sure she made it home safely. It's a two-hour drive back to Delaware. Fortunately, her friend Genevieve came along. They both made it home. Thank you ladies!]

As the place fills up, the party is just getting started, but I gotta go. I'm just a little bit sick plus I have some website stuff I promised to catch up on. I had a good time. April 18, 2005 11:25pm

I packed up my sound system and lights said goodbye to my friends (old and new ones) and headed towards the metro.

Good night Citron! April 18, 2005 11:56pm

A friend called me to offer to give me a lift. So with a few minutes to kill, I stopped by CVS to get a bottle of something healthy to drink.

I took this photo as I waited for my friend to pick me up on Connecticut Ave to take me home. Yet another fun night at Citron comes to a close. April 19, 2005 12:06am

Cafe Citron features a live flamenco show every Monday at 8:00pm and 9:00pm. DJ Helio comes in at 10:00pm.

But wait...my "workday" isn't over until I edit and publish photos from my favorite night of the week, Monday!

April 19, 2005 2:52am

I know it sounds crazy to be "working" on the computer so early in the morning, but it's actually very therapeutic to edit photos and reflect on what was going on and what I was feeling, thinking etc. As I go through them, I also am reminded of how fortunate I am to be doing what I do for a living. Flamenco is fun!

April 19, 2005 2:57am

Then I gotta think of captions for the photos, not to mention remembering all the names of people I met throughout the night.

OK enough blabbering on. It's 3:00am and it's time for me to get some sleep. Goodnight!

Kayoko in Japan

Around this time of the year, I perform at the Cherry Blossom Festival with Kayoko Iwamoto. But she moved back to Japan last August. Kayoko and her daughter María are getting back to flamenco again. Here she is with El Toleo and his group in Japan.

Pool party April 17, 2005

It was warm beautiful day and you know where I like to go, but instead of the Georgetown Harbour, I ended up at a friend's rooftop pool party in Dupont Circle. I could've taken the metro to get there, but I decided to walk instead...

After walking through Georgtown, I passed through a city park where someone I hadn't met before introduced himself recognizing me from my website saying "Excuse me, aren't you Mr DC Flamenco?" This sort of thing has happened many times before, but I never get tired of it. I love meeting people who enjoy my website. April 17, 2005 4:00pm

Another sunny day in Dupont Circle. April 17, 2005 4:09pm

Steve Svoboda and Shahram at the rooftop pool. Notice the cellphones on the table. You'd think that on a day like this, we'd turn off the phones. Steve was the first one to pull out the guitar and start the music. April 17, 2005 4:38pm

I remember coming to this pool three years ago on a day like this. Steve and I brought our guitars and started playing. Eventually a couple of girls sat down next to our table, complimented our music and invited us have some of their food. Three years later, we've all become good friends, but they couldn't make it today.

But back then, one of the residents complained about our music and got us "banned" from the pool.

View of the city. That's the National Cathedral sprouting out of the horizon. April 17, 2005 4:58pm

Our little party. This was the first weekend the pool was open, so we had this place almost all to ourselves. Next weekend will be packed I'm sure. April 17, 2005 4:59pm

Steve and I serenaded a friend on speaker phone (and I need to remember to bring sunglasses). April 17, 2005 5:22pm

He had to go to rehersal, so we cut the party short. Oh well, there's always next weekend. April 17, 2005 5:46pm

I walked back home through Georgetown as the sun set down in the horizon. The streets were filled with so many people dressed for the warm weather. Along the way, I saw my friend Madiha and then Ginette. TIP: walk whenever you can. It's good exercise, good for enjoying the beautiful sights of the city and meeting old friends and making new ones. April 17, 2005 5:51pm

Flamenco party April 16, 2005

This was the second of two flamenco parties in one evening for me. Not that one was any better than the other, but I just knew this second one would still be happening even if I arrived very very late--which I did!

April 17, 2005 3:12am

Fast forward five hours later, I wake up at a friend's house where I crashed on the spare futon couch. As I opened my eyes, I was almost startled by the sight of this huge stylized vintage poster of a flamenco dancer. I would've slept in until noon, but I had a guitar student meeting me at 11:00am! Cafe Citron party April 16, 2005

This was the first of two flamenco parties in one night. I was with Jenifer and her friends some of whom dance flamenco. I have met many many new friends here during the past four years that I've been performing here. It seemed the perfect place to have to party--the same bar where I met Jenifer last summer.

Miguelito and Jenifer and her roommates Diana and Racquel. This was the first time I met Jenifer's roommates but having read my photo blog during the past year, they knew what I look like and so they greeted me as if we were already old friends. Nice! April 16, 2005 10:26pm

Wedding gig April 16, 2005

I've been doing a lot of weddings lately. Most of the time it's just me on the guitar. My clients decide to hire me after coming to one of my shows which is pretty normal. But it's such a compliment to me when they leave it completely up to me to play whatever I think is appropriate during this important lifetime event.

This wedding ceremony took place in an historic house on Capitol Hill.

Casablanca April 15, 2005

After the morning school show at Andalucía, I got on the metro to transport my sound equipment to my next gig at Casablanca in Old Town Alexandria.

I love the view from the train as we cross over the Potomac. April 15, 2005 1:19pm

That's Rosslyn (where I live) in the horizon. April 15, 2005 1:20pm

April 15, 2005 1:20pm

I arrived at Casablanca and dropped off my equipment and went back out to enjoy the day. Five hours later I came back to the restaurant to set up...

In less than ten minutes, I'm all set up. This is what the mixer looks like as I sit in my chair. It pays to know your equipment well cuz you have to make adjustments in low light conditions like this. April 15, 2005 6:58pm

View from my seat on the stage. April 15, 2005 6:59pm

The show is not until 7:30, so I still have time for a quick walk outside. April 15, 2005 7:11pm

Andalucía April 15, 2005

This is the third day in a row of morning school shows at the Andalucía Restaurant. Unfortunately, it's quite early for my body clock so I need something to wake me up...

The choices of energy drinks these days is overwhelming. April 15, 2005 8:55am

Today's school show dancer is Jen. April 15, 2005 10:47am

As I warmed up my hands, Antonio finds the appropriate flamenco background music for today's audience of 82 students! April 15, 2005 10:48am

We use mp3's which makes life easier when finding music. Do you remember the days when we actually had to find a CD, manually insert it into the player and press the play button? Nowadays we just scan the playlist and double-click. :-) April 15, 2005 10:48am

Uh-oh, 82 kids plus dessert equals a room full of hyper kids on a sugar high. :-) Surprisingly, they were very well-behaved and were attentive enough for me to actually teach them something about flamenco. April 15, 2005 11:13am

Andalucía April 14, 2005
