Miguelito's Photo Diary

October 22, 2004 - October 26, 2004

Las Tapas October 26, 2004

Customarily, I play a guitar solo before the dance part of the show. When there are substitute dancers, I usually find out who they are the moment they approach the stage.

Last Tuesday, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that dancer Ulrika Frank was the substitute. This was the first time I've performed with her and I believe it was her first time to perform with a guitarist in the DC area. She did a solea por bulerias for the first set and a tientos/tangos (see photos) for the second. Excellent dancer. I was impressed!

My thanks to Jose Oretea for taking pics.

Despite his busy work schedule, my friend Steve Svoboda frequently makes the time to come out and support the local flamencos. Thanks Steve! October 26, 2004 10:17pm

Pilar Andujar workshop at Cabin John Mall October 23, 2004

To my knowledge, this is the first time Pilar Andujar has given a workshop in the DC area. Thanks to Ziva for bringing Pilar and organizing this workshop which was well-attended.

Ulrika Frank's class at Joy of Motion October 23, 2004

After interviewing Ulrika, I decided to attend one of her classes to take a few pics and observe her teaching methods firsthand.

Interesting trivia: did you know that years ago, when Shahram was still living in Sweden, he found my website, contacted me for info about the local flamenco scene before he moved to DC? He also took a workshop from Ulrika while still in Stockholm. October 23, 2004 10:37pm

La Rosa Negra Restaurant in Lewes, DE October 22, 2004

Since moving to Delaware (2 hours from DC), my long-time friend Micaela Moreno has been working hard setting up flamenco shows at various hispanic festivals there during the past few years. This past Friday, we gave a performance at a restaurant called La Rosa Negra 1201 Savannah Rd in Lewes, DE. Call 302-645-1980.

On Route 50 about to get on 404. Only an hour to go! October 22, 2004 5:55pm

I couldn't find someone to take pics during our show, sorry. Anyway, the performers were dancers Micaela Moreno, Shahram Tehranian and guitarist Miguelito (that's me!). The audience was very enthusiastic about our show--we've been invited to come back again. For the benefit of flamencos in Delaware, I'll announce the next performance as soon as it is confirmed.

Micaela had her share of local fans from Delaware in the audience. I did too although it was pure coincidence that one of my former coworkers (when I used to have a day job in Arlington, VA) just happened to be in the restaurant that night!

Gigi and I performed here two years ago. They invited us back to give a half-hour presentation to an assembly of the entire student body at this all-girls school.
